There’s a poll out on kids’ spending allowances, and more than 7,500 people weighed in.
44% of them said they never got an allowance. 36% got an allowance at some point when they were younger, but they had to earn it and 14% got one, but it wasn’t tied to chores.
When asked, 62% of people say kids should get an allowance, and they should earn it. Maybe they believe it’s important to teach kids the value of hard work, that they should contribute to household chores and that they have responsibilities.
17% say children should get an allowance, but it should not be tied to chores. Maybe they feel like the most important lesson is learning about money, budgeting, saving and that you should help out around the house without expecting to be paid for it.
People were also asked, “What age, if any, do you think children should start receiving an allowance?”
34% said seven to nine years old, 26% said 10 to 12 years old, 11% said six or younger, 8% said 13 to 15 years old and 3% said 16 or older.
Gen Z’ers were more likely to say kids shouldn’t start getting an allowance until they’re teenagers.
