Triple-A has released a study, which says that 79% of American drivers admit to speeding. 15% say they speed “frequently,” 30% are “sometimes” speeders, 34% are “rare” speeders and only 21% “never” speed.
And it sounds like people were honest when asked why they speed.
31% said they speed “to get around slower drivers,” 25% said they do it “to reach their destination faster” and 21% do it to “avoid holding up traffic.”
When asked what would cause them to slow down, 79% said to “avoid getting a ticket.” 72% said to “avoid being involved in a crash” and 60% said they’d slow down for “bad weather.”
Most drivers say that posted speed limits are appropriate, but many also say driving 10 miles per hour over the limit is acceptable and nearly half believe “keeping up with traffic” is safer than obeying the posted limit.
30% say they don’t think speeding is a big deal because “no one actually drives the speed limit.”
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding is a factor in nearly 30% of traffic fatalities.
