Answer: Commute
Clues: “Work” and “Drive”
A new study found the average commute is worth the equivalent of $8,158 a year. That’s not even factoring in gas or wear-and-tear on your car. It’s just what the average person would get paid for all that time sitting in traffic.
The average worker spends 223 hours a year commuting to and from their job. And the average hourly wage is just under $37 an hour.
Your total could be higher or lower than that $8,000 number. It just depends on how much you make, and how long your commute is.
People in and around San Francisco have the most expensive commute at roughly $13,000 a year. The low end for smaller cities is more like $5,000.
