Nearly 40% of us do this in public when we need time alone. What is it?

Answer: Go to the bathroom

Clues: “Porcelain” and “Flush”

Happy World Toilet Day!  The United Nations made it a holiday more than a decade ago to raise awareness about sanitation needs around the world. Their motto this year is “Toilets:  A Place for Peace.”  And a poll found it really is a spot we go to when we need some peace and quiet.

38% of us sometimes go to the bathroom when we’re out in public, just to get some alone time or take a break.

The top five things we go to the bathroom for, when we don’t really need to go:

1.  To wash our hands.

2.  To touch up make-up, or check our appearance in the mirror.

3.  To get away from an awkward or uncomfortable situation.

4.  To get some alone time.

5.  To chat privately with friends.  Women tend to do that more than men.

13% of people said they’ve also used a public bathroom to do drugs.  And 16% have gotten-it-on in a public restroom.

Have you ever bought something at a store just so they’d let you use the bathroom?  44% of us have done it.

(In other bathroom news:  CNN talked to an expert who said you really shouldn’t be spending more than 10 minutes on the toilet.  Any longer than that ups your risk for hemorrhoids.  But so can rushing things and straining too much.)
